Please have organised some way of remembering User names or Passwords! You are going to have a lot of these! Some of the methods that work well are:

  • notebooksScreen_shot_2010-10-20_at_9.30.03_PM.png
  • exercise books
  • if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch then get 'LockBox' Lockbox (Free to $4.19) Stores your user names, passwords, account details. A number password is needed to enter it.
What does not work in my vast experience of 14 years of working with teachers are 'various pieces of scrap paper'!!!

Basic Teacher Digital Toolkit

Skype

Set up a personal/professional account. This is useful for having professional conversations with your PLN. At some stage also set up a class account so that students can converse with children in other classes and schools.

Google

To set up a Google account you need to get Gmail, this is important because it will allow you access to Google Docs a very useful collaborative tool and a place to save documents that can be accessed on any computer. You can also make forms and quizzes for your students. It also allows you to create blogs in Blogger, and access to a lot more Google tools

Jing

A Jing account allows you to take screen captures and then annotate them with words, arrows and boxes, perfect for making instructions.

Slideshare

Slideshare is a great storage place for your documents and slideshows. It allows you to embed your docs/slideshows in wikis or blogs. It is also a great resource place to look at and download other teachers docs/slideshows

Delicious

Delicious is a place to save your Bookmarks or Favourites so that you can access them on any computer at any time, it is also a great resource by networking with other teachers and sharing their bookmarks as well. You need to set up a Yahoo account for this. It can be difficult to set up but perservere. If you want a delicious account for your class then you will need to set up a 'class' Yahoo account.

Wikispaces

Register a Wikispace account so that you can join any of the wikis I have made or that other educators have made. Do this so that you can comment and collaborate on them. You will also one day might want to make your own professional or class wiki.

Google Chrome

I recommend that you have at least 3 browsers Mac (Safari, Firefox, Chrome) Win (Explorer, Firefox, Chrome)

Facebook

Facebook is not necessarily a personal noticeboard, it can be used for educational purposes. I have a business Facebook page where I post the updates I have made to websites. If you have 'Liked' my Facebook page then you will have access to all my latest updates as they will show up on your personal wall. Note: Liking my Facebook page does not make me your friend, so I can't follow you or see your personal wall.
ichat
iChat is available on everybody's Mac computer. For use within the school you do not have to sign up an account, just open iChat, go to Window and select Bonjour list. Make sure all of your computers have Bonjour opened and then you can start using iChat. Thanks Anthony for instructions,
